You weren’t “engaging”—I took your words as earnest and you said I was wrong, you were “joking.” In other words, you were being a snarky bully. I’m against that. It’s a mode that has already driven a lot of good people off this godforsaken website.

And if you reread my Kevin Williamson piece you will see that I objected to when he behaved that way on Twitter. As I objected for years to talk radio hosts who operated in that mode.

Fair enough! I hold to the opposite idea (that in the present moment, mockery of the powerful, including powerful journalists, is a good thing). We'll have to agree to disagree.

And yet it’s only powerful women *who aren’t leftists* that journalist Twitter feels justified in treating this way—that is, extended, constant mocking and bullying of which you are only a tiny part (though well aware of its existence and capable of groking the cumulative burden)

And to be honest, I feel like I spend far more time mocking, say, David Brooks or Andrew Sullivan or Jon Chait. Not to deny the special burden faced by female writers, which, I agree, we should be sensitive to.

Yes, by all means, let's be protective to the frail little ladies

It's not about protecting female frailty but noticing if women are excessively targeted. i think a good argument can be made that Weiss gets blamed for a lot of garbage that is James Bennet's fault.

I know Cathy's position on this and I think it's wrong.

I wrote about this here https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2014/01/when-misogynist-trolls-make-journalism-miserable-for-women/282862/ … (to be clear, Jeet, not lumping you in with that)

Right. I think our only area of disagreement here is that I can think of plenty of leftists women who get the same treatment but, for obvious tribal reasons, it doesn't register for you the way Weiss does (and vice versa with me).

I’m extremely impressed with this very fair point. Try expanding that mindset into other areas.
