Trump's declaration that he'd meet Rouhani "without preconditions" once again reflects his departure from traditional American Exceptionalism dogma. He doesn't buy the mythology which says unconditional meetings violate America's sacred honor. To him it's just another transaction

He also departed from traditional American Exceptionalism dogma in certain ways. Apparently the electorate is not as entranced by this dogma as the foreign policy professionals

Trump does seem to have gone further though. Correct me if I’m wrong, but as president Obama never publicly offered to meet with the leader of Iran

Obama, like Trump, was firmly opposed by the foreign policy establishment so proud of its successes in Iraq & Afghanistan & Vietnam. They defeated fp insider candidates one after another: Hillary, McCain, Jeb!, Little Marco, and Hillary (again). Obama-Trump is the peace vote.
