2. Trump's foreign policy in general is a shitshow that will do long term damage, a combination of undoing anything Obama did, cuddling up to autocrats, alienating allies, & general bluster. But even here there are a few silver linings.

3. Amid the general (and dangerous) fucked-upness of Trump's foreign policy, there does run an interesting thread where he realizes that after 16 years of Middle Easter war, America needs to retrench from ground combat. That's true.

4. This is not to say (pace Maureen Dowd &
@mtracey) that Trump is in any way a "dove" or believer in restraint. He isn't. He just prefers, in tradition of LeMay, to bomb rather than send ground troops. It's part of unilateralist tradition.Show this thread -
5. Anyways, it should be perfectly possible to oppose Trump in general & also support normalizing relations with North Korea, avoiding ground troops in Syria & negotiating an end to Afghan occupation.

6. One caveat to all this is that even in areas where Trump's policies are broadly correct (say, normalizing relations with North Korea), the way he enacts those policies (ineptly, with many lies) is almost certain to lead to failure & possibly disaster.

Are we sure he has any responsibility in this move at all? My sense is that has not even thought much about the Taliban at all and this is a Mattis thing.

Comparing Trump to Hitler makes you appear a fool. Perhaps you need to read some history.
