I somehow missed "I Have No Mouth" and just read it. Dated for sure. And daring: an ebony woman! And told from a 50s/60s male perspective. But I knew about these issues going in, and even with that it was a good tale.

Some of them are really good, “I Have no Mouth” is fondly remembered for a reason, but a lot of his stories have this sort of sweaty, trying-to-impress energy that has not aged well

I read the 1000 page ESSENTIAL a couple years back, 90 percent or more of which I'd first read between ages 11-19. Un-shocking realization: he's a great YA writer, pre-that market niche invention. Harder to make case as giant of modern lit tho. I love him forever anyway.
