2. Now, at the risk of destroying any chance of ever getting a job at a think tank, I have to say: we shouldn't fetishize the Western Alliance. There's a genuine argument that USA should have a more modest foreign policy.

3. What Trump is doing is very strange, in that he's breaking with 70 years of American foreign policy & targeting the very institutions the USA made: NATO, EU, Gatt, G-7 etc.

4. But for me the larger problem is not so much Trump's desire to draw back USA power but the way he's doing it, by fiat without buy-in from any American institutions.

5. Even as Trump is preaching America drawback, there's lots of signs that his Secretary of Defense & others aren't buying it. So USA is sending very mixed messages to world. That's dangerous.

I don't buy that sensationalist claim. They are planning on shifting troops to other Northern European countries (Poland + Baltics), and other spots in Eastern Europe. They are looking to spread out forces to counter new threats.
