Dune is hot because people need a science-fiction fantasy epic loaded with in-jokes and esoterica that isn't a corporate-owned franchise machine discussed primarily by a vituperative community of stans

some of Dune's cross-political appeal is like Tolkien's: hippies respond to the ecological undertones, the mysticism, the beautiful fallen world; reactionaries respond to combat, antiquated language. But there's more to it with Dune: It's about power more than good vs. evil.

The Atreides are, in the main, more noble and loyal and humane than their enemies, but especially once allied with the Arab-Muslim/zen warrior monk stand-ins the Fremen, they play hardball (to the tune of 60 billion lives or something). I think you can see why that resonates.

The Atreides might look good but they are in fact bad. They are the Kennedys of spice mining.

I think the text itself is deeply ambivalent about whether or not the Atreides family is "good" or "bad", though it sort of pulls it punches re: Paul specifically until late in the first book.
