Pushback on the Quillette piece on Steven Galloway. @JesseBrown makes some good criticisms, especially about MC being Galloway's student (which was in a tweet, but still). Cran should have disclosed his involvement higher up.https://twitter.com/JesseBrown/status/1011702323884806144 …

      1. I'm keeping score, Brad. Your opus contains serious factual errors. Let's begin. https://twitter.com/bradcran/status/1011359910947221504 …

I'm not sure though that it was "unethical" to assign Cran the story. For sure it is generally to be avoided that reporting pieces should not be assigned to people with a stake in them. But sometimes biased parties are the only ones who care enough or are in a position to drag

overlooked facts to light. When the choice is no story at all, something by a biased party can still have value. Proof is in the details and so far at least core facts of Bran's account have not been challenged.

A lot of the "facts" of this case rest on Boyd report, which hasn't been made public & which Cran had partial access to which is denied to other writers & parties. That's a big problem.

That is indeed a problem. But it often happens with reporting that we have to take something on trust that can't immediately be verified. Personal testimony is a common example. Cran piece deserves to be judge by that standard.

But he's not relying on personal testimony. He's relying on the veracity of report which is not public, which he seems not to have seen all of, which Galloway has in his possession, and which Galloway refuses to authorize the full release of. That's very thin ice.

The fact that the report is out there, and could potentially be released by someone else, provides an incentive for Cran not to misreport it. As for Galloway, it is not clear if he is allowed to release it. Partial leaks are normal in many other contexts . . .

. . . seems a bit quick to turn around now and say partial leak is uniquely problematic here.

I'll add that to me partial leaking has been problem all along (by many sides, not just Galloway) which is one reason I've shied away from commenting on this murky affair. The core factual basis of story is still in shadows.

In other contexts I think you, like me and everybody, are OK with partial leaking. I don't get why it is problem here.
