A lot of the "facts" of this case rest on Boyd report, which hasn't been made public & which Cran had partial access to which is denied to other writers & parties. That's a big problem.

That is indeed a problem. But it often happens with reporting that we have to take something on trust that can't immediately be verified. Personal testimony is a common example. Cran piece deserves to be judge by that standard.

I think it is a bit unfair to describe piece as posing as New York Times. He does disclose his involvement, albeit not as soon as he could.
