We don't "have to" be civil to anyone. But there's legit debate about whether some kinds of incivility are counterproductive. E.g. Sanders/Red Hen thing could help GOP turnout in Nov. w/ little upside. Kirstjen Nielsen case a tougher call, I think. But both cases worth debating.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1010722442338357248 …

But civility is expected when we vote for reps (Dems) who support mass deportations that divide families as well? Supported Obama, read about all this before.

I don't really buy the pragmatic argument either though. So long as the Trump administration pursues fascist policies, people are going to do "rude" things to people in that administration, & Trump's base will always be able to find evidence that they're persecuted

Pragmatically speaking, a civil conversation about whether the left is being too rude will not convince anyone to be more civil BUT will persuade some moderates that the left really is out of hand and push them towards Trump. It feeds into the both-sides myth

Way past time for hand wringing on this question. Trumpsters deserve all the respect they've earned - none!

We’re also past the point where any persuadable voter gives a rip about civility.

"Civility" is weaponized impunity: they'll accuse you of incivility no matter what you say or do. Just stop fretting about it. Better: call them out

Pragmatic: lack of civility paved the way for insulter DJT election; the more we promote incivility the better conditions are for Trump.
