Now imagine: "We're really having a debate on whether we have to be civil to people who murder babies in utero? Fuck civility." I would be genuinely shocked if Jeet did not respond to such a tweet by pronouncing it an incitement to violence.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1010722442338357248 …

This is sound logic.

Yeah, this whole, “We’re going to lose civility” argument is empty, and can only be made by people who’ve been protected because of their race and class. The number of “uncivil” things happening to poor folk, black folk, basically every marginalized community is proof.

Well you're technically right, but you're framing it in a misleading way to suggest incivility doesn't lead to violence, just because there is violence in a civil society. You know for a fact more in civility leads to more violence

Sounder logic.

So your logic is that because civility can lead to violence that incivility isn't in any way related? That's lousy logic

No. An underlying schism over slavery led to both incivility and violence. An underlying schism over the Vietnam war led to both incivility and violence.

Not sure violence is ever “courteous and polite”—the definition of “civility” in this context. Of course, situations arise where it is no longer moral to be civil against a threat that cannot be influenced by civility. But that does not make violence compatible with civility.

State violence is usually polite and full of paperwork and blame shifting. The reps at the Medicaid office won't yell at you when they tell you you make 25 cents too much now to get medical coverage, but that's violence
