I find the separation policy (& lies around it) abhorrent. Yet how many other issues can this logic apply to? "What, be civil to people who [kill unborn babies/kill kids in drone strikes/rob ppl of health care/defend rapists/defend jihadists?" This can get real ugly real fast.https://twitter.com/HeerJeet/status/1010722442338357248 …

We're really having a debate on whether we have to be civil to people who tear babies & children away from their parents, leading to incalculable trauma? Fuck civility.

There's a pragmatic case for civility but that's really a case by case thing. In many cases, I think civility is apropropirate. I'm not sure if there is any larger argument that we owe civility to people who do things we regard as reprehensible. 1/2

Civility is both vital and oppressive. We need it for deliberative discourse, but there also needs to be mechanism within culture for working around. Punk is an example. Extreme value divergence is another. It has to be weighed individually.

If I may interject, a friend of mine wrote something related, a reply to the "oh yeah well you're being really intolerance of MY reprehensible views!" that might be relevant http://www.projgirlspire.com/tolerance-is-a-good-buzz-word-but-what-does-it-really-mean/ …

It really isn’t a case by case thing at all. Just treat people w/ respect, I’m not sure when that became so difficult in this country. And I’ve been against the separation policy since day one including when it isn’t done at the border which no one cares about.

You seem to be really concerned about yourself and who you get to be uncivil to. You're not the victim here.

It is especially people who do things we regard as reprehensible who require our civility. It’s easy with everyone else. Breaking the system when we get outraged leads to anarchy

I'm curious if you feel personally at risk from this admin for your health or life. I feel threatened, and before Trump got elected I never once thought I'd feel this at risk from my own government. It sounds like you're saying I should be nice to someone trying to kill me.
