In other words, I am accusing him of skewing not his facts, but his emphasis.

If "bad faith" means something different to most people, then I should stop using the term in this sort of case, but I can't think of a good term to use instead. It's not intellectual dishonesty. What other term fits this case?

Yes. I'm not speculating about Anton's real motivations; I'm inferring them from his famous magnum opus.

Interesting question, though: Why would he admit his "true" views in the Flight 93 essay (which helped get him a big gig in the Trump WH, after all), and then dishonestly make sanitized arguments now?

Audience. WaPo readers are different from GOP activists. Of course, I SUSPECT that his real motivations for wanting immigration restriction are more racist than even "The Flight 93 Election" admits, but I will give him the benefit of the doubt there.

I know that quote. It's so strange. He's an acolyte of Harry Jaffa, who was very right wing, but became famous for turning Lincoln into a secular saint for defending human equality, and until like 4 years ago Jaffa students never talked about immigration. Yet here we are.

Just jumping in here to say there's an intellectual history to be written on how Jaffa-ites, who used to feud heavily with paleo-cons, have become Trumpist paleo-cons. The figure of Charles Kessler important to this story.
