2. The proper analogy to Chait's stance is Cold War liberalism. Yes, CPUSA was (sorry tankies!) mostly bad. But CW liberal threat inflation about domestic communism paved the way for McCarthyism, which was much bigger threat to American liberties than poor old CPUSA

Just had to end an obnoxious email exchange with an acquaintance who not only equated them but kept harping in the former and dismissing the latter, all beneath an “I’m a classical liberal annoyed with *both* extremes” facade.
