Hofstadter was absolutely right about the implicit (often explicit) anti-Semitism coursing through most populist movements, however.

No, he's not right. There's a good scholarly literature on this (See Nugent's The Tolerant Populists). Short version: real home of anti-Semitism in that era was WASP elite, not populists.
