There also is the counter-movement of course - much of E.P. Thompson’s rescue of the forgotten from the “enormous condescension of posterity” is an effort to recognize that then-actors’ sense of the possibilities is important even when they didn’t work out.

One of the essays I’d love to write if I ever had the time is on Thompson’s understanding of history as a kind of evolutionary theory - he uses the language, and has a sense both of how some changes are selected, and of how that selection has irreducibly stochastic elements.
