Okay. (I have my disagreements w/Burnham), btw, but I don't see how that puts him outside the Enlightenment tradition. There is a rich tradition w/in conservatism (and liberalism) of criticizing the excesses of the Enlightenment that fall far short of rejecting the Enlightenment

To the extent that conservatives accept the Enlightenment mainstream (individual freedom, reason as social basis, questioning authority and tradition, etc.) they are NOT conservative. But Anglo-American conservatism has never been the purer European 88ism, ala Maistre.
