      Not the 1800s, the 1600s

Sigh. Have you read Jamelle's article? I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that it is saying 1600s were great.

Sorry! Didn't mean to suggest that. I was simply responding to the comment about the 1800s and pointing out that Jamelle's analysis locates the era before the invention of modern racism in the 1600s, not the 1800s.

I don't think anyone is saying things were great, no. But I do think that some of these arguments rather ironically tend to minimize pre-Enlightenment racism.

For example, if I say that Nazi biological anti-Semitism grew out of Christian anti-Semitism but was more systematic, far-reaching & extreme, then I'm not saying that Christian anti-Semitism was a good thing! Far from it. But trying to mark out historical shift.

And that's fine as long as you avoid the embarrassment of claiming that Nazis invented anti semitism because of that shift. Which is why it's embarrassing to claim that the enlightenment "invented" racism.

Nazism is just Hitlerism. The man grew up in a Catholic backwater and constantly references Jesus and providence in Mein Kampf. He also supported his views with 3rd rate late-19th century Darwinist ideas on "races", but those were obviously not skin color based.
