Who is wholly against the Enlightenment? The debate is between people who say it has complex legacy worth challenging in places and those who uncritically want to celebrate.https://twitter.com/willwilkinson/status/1004079122379886592 …

Can't we all just agree that the Enlightenment is too various and complex to be wholly for or against?

Obvious piffle. It's between those who say the Enlightenment invented racism/colonialism vs. those who say that racism/colonialism existed previously (albeit by other names) and Enlightenment values are the best framework for challenging it.

The people who think Enlightenment didn't massively exacerbate racism/colonialism simply don't know the relevant scholarship.

Fascistic/far right/magical philosophies are wholly against the Enlightenment, as ridiculous as that is: Rene Guenon and Julius Evola, who Steve Bannon read and quoted, want to return a time before rationalism, do away with liberal/materialistic values, and restore magic.

That’s only because they haven’t studied the relevant literature re: colonialism/racism, though — Brannon could probably sign on to that part.

The Enlightenment like the Progressive Era and every other period of human advancement is a mixed bag -- some vital, revolutionary advancements combined with some patterns of thought and behavior that are,by today's standard, unthinkably wrong.

Well not “debate” so much at the Quilette crowd wanted an excuse to portray a left wing black man as anti-Science and against Western civ. It’s all peacocking and signalling. Nothing honest or sincere.

but how will i ever make a highly prejudicial and agendised rhetorical empty signification in public if i don't have such a loaded term to vomit everywhere?
