And worth noting how actually destructive US policies (boarding schools and AmerIndian 'improvement,' for instance) were rooted not in some pre- or contra-enlightenment philosophy, but in contemporary, deeply 'enlightened views' about civilizational and racial progress.

Schools & "improvement" & missionaries were the comparatively more enlightened side of the 1800s policy debate. The other side was straight-up genocide.
