given what @jbouie is saying is uncontroversial among scholars of this period, the pushback is a pretty interesting study in how the Enlightenment can function as an ideological talismanhttps://twitter.com/jbouie/status/1003000744314695680 …

here are my four threads where i lay out this enlightenment stuff. obviously none of the brain geniuses retweeting that old thread will read them, but you might find them useful. (1/5)

he's presenting a pretty accepted piece of intellectual history, that sure, there is some scholarly debate about, but people are mobbing him, calling him a moron and an idiot...what is he doing wrong exactly?

uhh not really, kant wrote some pretty racist shit, although i'm a big fan i acknowledge that. enlightenment rationality contributed materially to scientific racist ideology, look at Gobineau and Chamberlain,

no, he means racism in a very particularly way, as a political ideology that posited biological differences in human beings, and strove to organize society on that basis, not just "animus towards different looking people"

We need a different word for what he is describing then. Because there isn’t a common vocabulary between what pundits and academics mean by racism and what everyone else thinks of by racism. My first thought on seeing this was wondering whether he mean power structures or bigotry

Um, we already have such words. Xenophobia & prejudice refers to distrust/hatred of others, racism to a more systematic ideology of biological difference. Fact you don't know these words doesn't mean they don't exist.

There is very obviously a folk definition of racism dealing mainly with interpersonal bigotry. The fact that this word is also used to describe a system of oppression is the issue. It’s really not that hard to understand why this leads to issues online.

Most people don't use the word racism that way (systematic ideology?). And Bouie meant something MUCH more specific than"racism", he eventually defined it down to "scientific racism that laid groundwork for colonialism, with white people at the top".

Which gets the causality wrong: colonialism gave birth to racism, not vice versa.
