There's also an argument to be made that Obama never ran against an explicitly White Identity Politics candidate and that on purely economic issues he had an edge with Trump voters.

But because Trump ran on culture/race, not economics, he appealed to people who in 2012 voted for Obama.

Yes, but I would stress that the bulk of Trump's racist support had already been voting Republican for years. The Southern Strategy had been the GOP's brand since 1964. Most of the defections were from Trump's unexpected pitch to labor by attacking NAFTA and similar trade deals.
