Both can be true. Trump's coalition included anti-Obama voters fuelled by racial resentment & Obama-to-Trump voters moved mostly by anti-establishment sentiment.https://twitter.com/MattGrossmann/status/1001965202827563008 …

Obama viewed Trump’s election as a backlash against his “early” racial achievement & cultural move left, but his advisors recognized that they had run the same campaign against Clinton as Trump: declaring her part of corrupt establishment unable to change https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/30/us/politics/obama-reaction-trump-election-benjamin-rhodes.html …

Who were coincidentally more than happy to ignore Trump's blatant racism towards Obama, Mexicans, and pretty much anyone nonwhite? Yes there's a word for those people. It's "racist".

Irony is that only @realDonaldTrump was able to cleanse the Democrats from the crooked Clintons.

There's also an argument to be made that Obama never ran against an explicitly White Identity Politics candidate and that on purely economic issues he had an edge with Trump voters.

But because Trump ran on culture/race, not economics, he appealed to people who in 2012 voted for Obama.

Yes, but I would stress that the bulk of Trump's racist support had already been voting Republican for years. The Southern Strategy had been the GOP's brand since 1964. Most of the defections were from Trump's unexpected pitch to labor by attacking NAFTA and similar trade deals.

It’s amazing that Obama’s critical self-examination lasted for about two nanoseconds and didn’t include his willingness to let the big banks and the Bush torturers off the hook. He then immediately fought for neoliberal minions like Tom Perez to be installed in positions of power
