Natural talent can help speed things up, but any argument aside for age is total crap. You can do anything you set your mind to, but you might have to work hard to "get it". I think the real caveat is that starting later in life is harder and takes longer than starting young..

..so a lot of people feel very discouraged to try. It's also hard to look around at people your age who have been doing that something for maybe 15 years already.

Actually, this might be slightly off. Any "technical" profession should be fairly simple to learn, just repeat and repeat. This would include art/music as well as programming. But can you learn to be patient and compassionate to work with kids? I'm not so sure about that...
