How can I be sure I'm getting a legit copy via amazon? Local bookstores don't stock these types of books so I have to get them online and usually shipping fees are prohibitive (at least +100% to initial cost, much less via amazon)

I DM'd @nostarch about this and basically the answer is to check the reviews.. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't provide any other means of verifying the legitimacy of a seller. Make sure to report any fraudulent copies!

Same situation, I am personally in Frankfurt but Most non-English Europe will be in this conundrum. Example: The Hardware Hacker is $18.95 with shipping clocking in at $23.95 to Gallusviertel (60326) Hessen. The smaller B&M here fulfill through Amzn at times to boot. 
In my experience, book stores will be happy to order a book for you.
