Think of the oldest in-group to which you belong. Do you have more in common with a member of that group from 100 years ago or more in common with a random person of roughly your socioeconomic class from today?

While core beliefs might hold for a century (and more!) I think you'd have much more in common with a random person today than from a Jew 100 years ago, for example. Practices might be similar, but day-to-day life would be vastly different.
