Some interesting facts about #Chandrayaan2
1. Flight profile is very similar to Israel's #Beresheet: Start with a very high GTO (geostationary transfer orbit) then spend the next month raising the apogee until it turns into a lunar transfer orbit.
After that they'll spend another couple of weeks reducing the orbit in preparation for landing.
2. Before landing, the craft will split in 2! One part is a satellite that will remain in lunar orbit and the second is a lander that contains a rover inside. Even if the lander crashes, the satellite will remain operational for several years.
3. The landing site is nearby the Moon's south pole. This is the first time anyone is sending a probe this far south, so it's a great science opportunity!
4. Israel tried to be the 4th country to soft-land on the Moon, and unfortunately it didn't work out. If successful, this mission will instead make India the 4th country to soft-land on the moon! Fingers crossed!
5. This mission is a great technology demonstrator, following a successful (if unfortunate) ASAT (anti-satellite) test, it will place India as a space super-power, capable to creating complex satellites and rovers.
All in all, this is a very interesting mission and I'm certainly going to keep a close eye on it. The landing attempt is scheduled for Sept. 7th so I'll see you then, @isro ! Good luck!
