Have there been any proposals to stick a transmitter on a passing comet? Probably extremely tricky, but hey, free spaceship!

Kinda… but to rendezvous with it you need to be moving as fast as it is. So why bother with the comet? Just launch the transmitter.

How impossible would it be to make a very big, very elastic net, such that you could get the net positioned ahead of time and then have the comet drag your probe along?

Not impossible, just very impractical. You'd still to match orbital velocities or the comet's impact would vaporize the net, so again, just skip the comet and you're done.
