Something I've been thinking about lately. It seems platforms that don't regulate speech eventually become toxic. This is a little weird since, for instance, you almost never see a shouting match at a crowded grocery store. Why, in specific, is online discourse so often bad? /1

This continues to astonish me. I'm guessing it has less social repercussions because acting like an ass at, say, a family Thanksgiving, while a more ephemeral action, is more emotionally immediate. Facial expressions and vocal tones and physical gesticulations can be involved.
