Most people opposed to editable tweets worry about accountability. This is easily solved with publicly viewable version history.
There would need to be a very obvious *EDITED* notice somewhere. Also, maybe limit editing to a couple of minutes?

My solution is: 1. Show the version that was RTed followed by the most current edit, with a button to show all versions. 2. If the most current version is the RTed one, just show the previous versions button. 3. Show all edited tweets on a pink background.

So Sam could still change it to "buy my books" and people would see it, but everyone RTing the original would still have that wording show up on their timeline.
