In my university: Say a teacher pokes fun at a Republican: the class joins in. Say a teacher pokes fun at a Democrat: silence. Republicans know that if they speak up, they will be patronized. The Democrats feel comfortable speaking because they’re in a pro-Democrat environment.

This is true. One point re: conservatives in academic environments, however, is that having to actually defend their views renders them better versed in the weaknesses (& strengths) therein. They may be more likely than liberals to graduate knowing why they believe what they do.

Actually look at the asymmetrical cost / payout of discussing or not discussing. Some time it is not worth it
-
I would say that it is often not worth it. But the more often we decide that it's not worth it, the less practiced we are in engagement & disagreement, and the easier it is to retreat--to total silence, to anonymous posts online, to angry outbursts when we can't take it anymore.

The loud-and-uninvestigated niche has filled with bad faith / lazy actors in the last few years, and those who yell seem to win (in the moment). It's ugly, and destructive of human goodness and progress. Please don't flatten yourself on marble. This moment *will* pass.

I am a heterodox anti-authoritarian and passionate advocate for free speech. My wife is a professor of gender studies rooted in the tradition of Foucault. We love and respect each other, and have impossible conversations virtually everyday.
