Killing for sport is reprehensible. (Hunting for food is not.) Killing for sport, having made yourself immune from danger, makes the word “sport” generous and unjustified. Killing elephants for sport—who love, grieve, teach their young—is beyond the pale. HT @NAChristakishttps://twitter.com/yashar/status/1053052215395418113 …

Does the hunting economy help ensure their survival as a species right now, full stop?

I don't know. It *is* true that some hunting operations in Africa, which cater to rich Western sport hunters, help preserve wild lands. But we legitimately put limits on such things. No hunting of chimps is allowed--they are, like elephants, socially-complex, smart, long-lived.

So cuteness and sociability is a factor for you? Well then, I hate to break it to you but whitetail deer, likely the most hunted animal in N America, should be off limits according to your rules.

Your logic is flawed. Populations of white tailed deer are out of control due to lack of predators. Elephant populations have been going down every year for a century due to habituate loss and hunting for ivory and sport.
