Being liberal means letting actual rapists off the hook? That's pretty extreme.https://twitter.com/HeatherEHeying/status/1051603589213253633 …

“’If you are a liberal, by definition, you believe that it’s better to let a certain amount of guilty people go free than to jail one innocent man. That’s almost the definition of liberalism. These people on the left aren’t liberals at all, actually.’” https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/13/opinion/stephen-elliott-moira-donegan-media-men.html …

You have to choose: Either some guilty people go free, or some innocent people are punished. Which do you prefer? Choosing one position over the other is not extreme. And fantasizing up a utopia in which neither thing happens is just that: fantasy.

It's a no-brainer for me: let the guilty go free. We live in a world where freedom is bought by people who have enough wealth to afford it already.

The guilty who can afford to go free do go free. Innocent people go to jail all the time. It's news.

The fact that a system suffers from both corruption and banal human error is not an argument against the system. Some systems are broken beyond possibility of repair, or were gameable from the get-go, but I think more highly of ours than that, even now.

Seems like some people don't want to hear truth and won't look for proof, as in the case of Kavanaugh.

Ford presented no credible evidence to support her claims. She struck me (speaking as a physician) as an emotionally fragile, unreliable person.

As opposed to fucking Kavanaugh? This is why people don't go to the doctor.

This is why we need more statistics in school. I feel like nobody understands Type I/II error and the implications of that trade-off these days.

I'm not suggesting otherwise. We have ridiculous fiscal inequity today, so much so that the wealthy get what they want. The costs are not anywhere near the rewards they gained from the system. To try to reverse this, there needs to be some equalizing to protect the innocent.
