Being liberal means letting actual rapists off the hook? That's pretty extreme.https://twitter.com/HeatherEHeying/status/1051603589213253633 …

What's the conservative position? Seems that guilty and innocent in rape cases comes down not to evidence but to idealogy.
-
Blackstone's Ratio is still the basis of presumption of innocence.
-
It a tenet of western law for at least 300 years The guilty that walk usually will get caught again and hopefully justice will be served but the innocent individuals don't really put themselves in the position to be prosecuted again

It's a no-brainer for me: let the guilty go free. We live in a world where freedom is bought by people who have enough wealth to afford it already.
-
The guilty who can afford to go free do go free. Innocent people go to jail all the time. It's news.
-
The fact that a system suffers from both corruption and banal human error is not an argument against the system. Some systems are broken beyond possibility of repair, or were gameable from the get-go, but I think more highly of ours than that, even now.
-
Innocent until PROVEN Guilty. Not the other way around.
-
Seems like some people don't want to hear truth and won't look for proof, as in the case of Kavanaugh.
-
Ford presented no credible evidence to support her claims. She struck me (speaking as a physician) as an emotionally fragile, unreliable person.
-
As opposed to fucking Kavanaugh? This is why people don't go to the doctor.
-
Weird reason not to see a health professional, but sure.....

Leftists make it easy on themselves. If you are straight white and male then you are guilty of privilege. To the gulag with you!
-
Conversely, in the eyes of con shitheads, all white, straight men, who are at least middle class are innocent. Obviously
-
Everyone is bias right? so why would it surprise you that people view middle class folks as relatively harmless because they are. Not just so called whites either

Liberals (used to) value freedom of the individual above all else. That includes freedom from governmental infringement on even the rights of the accused. Hence the current term “classical liberal” and it’s very different meaning from the current definition

I’ve always been a proponent of this exact idea, even though I’m a lifelong conservatarian. Better a few guilty go free, than one innocent be imprisoned.

Hold up. Our entire justice system is based upon a “liberal” stance? We had opportunities to create a different justice system. But the fact that every State & the Federal standard remains “Proof beyond a reasonable doubt” is by definition “liberal”? No. I don’t buy it.
-
The US was founded as a liberal democracy in theory. People didn't act that way all the time but as long as the liberal part remains as our ideology we can correct what we are doing wrong.

Spot on! We decided this a long time ago. It’s better to let guilty go free than innocent people be punished. Welcome to Western Civilization. I find it hard to believe you could read a story about someone who was incarcerated unjustly for years and not take this position.
