Being liberal means letting actual rapists off the hook? That's pretty extreme.https://twitter.com/HeatherEHeying/status/1051603589213253633 …

“’If you are a liberal, by definition, you believe that it’s better to let a certain amount of guilty people go free than to jail one innocent man. That’s almost the definition of liberalism. These people on the left aren’t liberals at all, actually.’” https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/13/opinion/stephen-elliott-moira-donegan-media-men.html …

You have to choose: Either some guilty people go free, or some innocent people are punished. Which do you prefer? Choosing one position over the other is not extreme. And fantasizing up a utopia in which neither thing happens is just that: fantasy.

What's the conservative position? Seems that guilty and innocent in rape cases comes down not to evidence but to idealogy.

It a tenet of western law for at least 300 years The guilty that walk usually will get caught again and hopefully justice will be served but the innocent individuals don't really put themselves in the position to be prosecuted again

It's a no-brainer for me: let the guilty go free. We live in a world where freedom is bought by people who have enough wealth to afford it already.

The fact that a system suffers from both corruption and banal human error is not an argument against the system. Some systems are broken beyond possibility of repair, or were gameable from the get-go, but I think more highly of ours than that, even now.

Liberals (used to) value freedom of the individual above all else. That includes freedom from governmental infringement on even the rights of the accused. Hence the current term “classical liberal” and it’s very different meaning from the current definition

Hold up. Our entire justice system is based upon a “liberal” stance? We had opportunities to create a different justice system. But the fact that every State & the Federal standard remains “Proof beyond a reasonable doubt” is by definition “liberal”? No. I don’t buy it.

The US was founded as a liberal democracy in theory. People didn't act that way all the time but as long as the liberal part remains as our ideology we can correct what we are doing wrong.
