Totalitarian monster from Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. Not unlike Orwell's pig Napoleon in 1984.

Animal Farm. Not 1984.

Oops—you’re right.

Both great books.

These kinds of taunts are not representative of the vast of majority of people who support progressive policies and equal rights. It is warping the discourse to portray them as indicative of the "left."
-
I think you know that this is my point. They are the ones who are claiming to be on the left. I am now, have always been, on the left, and I see nothing honorable or representative over in authoritarian-left space. What I do see is their rhetoric and behavior gaining power.
-
Yes, I do understand that. I think you are overstating the nature of the problem. Identity politics on the left and right are worth discussion but I simply don't see it having the same influence you do; which, I suppose, is understandable.

Tribalism is *the* human problem, so it needs to be focused on wherever it takes hold

Personally I’m a huge fan of slippery slope arguments. Dangerous movements and good movements start small

Cue Thucydides 3:89... again...
Here's an item from 2011. Still applies:https://stevenpressfield.com/2011/10/the-first-modern-war/ … -
Damn. That’s really good, and so relevant.

I don’t know you Heather, but that threat, that identifying you by your race and gender as if they are negative traits about you, is freaky as heck. These people have become so indoctrinated that anyone not an ally is satan himself and their projection can’t get evil enough

It is an ever more powerful and mainstream set of tactics. And "allyship" is always contingent. I've met these types before--not this particular troll, although who knows when they're anonymous--but up close and personal when I was a professor:https://medium.com/@heyingh/evidence-of-my-racism-d744e0cd9f40 …

Ahhh, Evergreen. That explains it. Good on you for being bold enough to say something in spite of the obvious hardships that come with that now on some of these campuses

I’ve made the comment “it’s good to see the left eating their own”. Now I’m really afraid they might actually eat all the good ones that we need.
-
It does seem like they're trying, doesn't it. And to what end? In-group hatred must feel delicious, even when wrapped in hypocrisy about inclusion and diversity.

Half the reason these conversations exist and are normalized is because thoughtful people dignify tweets with less than 5 combined likes and retweets...
-
I think of it more as “exposing” than “dignifying.” More to the point, though, this kind of thinking is rising in prominence: in Olympia, I’ve heard stories from several once effective organizations of being taken over by activists, & destroyed in the name of “social justice.”
