Sigh. This isn’t helping. At all. “Or take the Senate itself—an institution that was literally designed to protect white supremacy from the threat of democracy.”https://www.thenation.com/article/white-men-have-good-reason-to-be-scared/ …

This is what happens when ppl become so enraptured w their singular theory of politics they don't stop to ponder reality of human diversity. Ppl hv a much wider & more varied panoply of values & policy priorities guiding political preferences than a univariate theory can explain

This is so good. Univariate systems are easier to grok, easier to get angry and passionate about, easier to describe to others and convince them to follow along, too. But people and our systems? Multivariate. Complex. Messy.

I don't know how to say what I want to say. I'll try. Growing up as a white man, being influenced by white men and growing up in a center-right white community outside of Chicago, there's no chance that this ends well.

There's no chance this ends well wherever you grew up. This is poison that everyone's going to end up drinking if doesn't stop.

Yep. Not sure how or why so many folks missed the history lesson that directing much of society's ire/derision/resentment at one specific demographic tends to evolve into mass tragedy quickly.

Certain bad habits are more tenacious than we thought. They find new outlets rather than simply expiring.

But how does it resolve itself if only one side play by the rules and the other invent rules with reckless impunity? Maybe a clash of these extremes is a good thing that will birth the centre and a common wealth.

Yes, that's why we need both conservatives and progressives. Lefties and righties. Everything would not magically be better if we got rid of the "wrong" side (whichever that may be according to anyone).

It's the ease and peace of mind of religion. You can let your frontal cortex rest and just not do the cognitive heavy lifting. Ideology is easy

I genuinely wonder whether it is productive to criticize a univariate argument for being one dimensional. Reading the comment thread on the page itself, it becomes clear that a lot of us are recognizing a common problem and then choosing to fight over the words to describe it.

They aren't criticising it for being one dimensional. They are criticizing it's lack of ability to assist in understanding complex systems.
