This is what happens when ppl become so enraptured w their singular theory of politics they don't stop to ponder reality of human diversity. Ppl hv a much wider & more varied panoply of values & policy priorities guiding political preferences than a univariate theory can explain

This is so good. Univariate systems are easier to grok, easier to get angry and passionate about, easier to describe to others and convince them to follow along, too. But people and our systems? Multivariate. Complex. Messy.

I don't know how to say what I want to say. I'll try. Growing up as a white man, being influenced by white men and growing up in a center-right white community outside of Chicago, there's no chance that this ends well.
-
There's no chance this ends well wherever you grew up. This is poison that everyone's going to end up drinking if doesn't stop.
-
Yep. Not sure how or why so many folks missed the history lesson that directing much of society's ire/derision/resentment at one specific demographic tends to evolve into mass tragedy quickly.

Certain bad habits are more tenacious than we thought. They find new outlets rather than simply expiring.

I do remember. I subscribed to The Nation for many, many years. Let the subscription lapse several years ago, though, as it started to turn...such a shame for a publication with its history.

Don't worry Heather, we are coming for racist white women like you to. You and the other Aunt Lydias of this country will lose power as the brutal white men you defend are taken down and punished. It will be gender neutral, don't worry. ALL the trash will be taken out.
-
Every person who claims that someone else is a racist is always the racist
-
This kind of sounds right, but it's not. It *is* possible to identify actual racism, and therefore to make the claim. I would agree, though, that right now, many claims of racism are facile, wrong, and do more harm than good.
-
It's funny that a bigot who got famous by targeting black students at a predominantly white school is talking about how claims of racism are wrong. Lady, if it wasn't for your racism no one would know you and you would still have to work for a living. Touting racism is your scam

Have you ever considered the possibility that you’re wrong, and that you’re doing damage to some causes you think are important?https://www.kqed.org/forum/2010101861511/mark-lilla-warns-democrats-identity-politics-is-ruining-the-party …
-
Of course I have CONSIDERED it. I'm not some Trumpist who never imagines that I am wrong. I mean, I'm not wrong but I have considered other points of view. I just understand how wrong headed those right-wing apologists who disagree with me are. PS- Hitch was a piece of garbage
-
Can you tell us about a time you changed your mind about something that you thought was important?
-
Sure I used to be a liberal

And no, I don't support this insanity. I really think these people WANT a civil war because they're under the delusion that they're the majority and it will usher some kind of social justice socialist utopia.
-
Unfortunately, I think you're right. They are delusional in imagining that utopia is possible at all, and a kind and fair society is also made far more difficult by this hateful rhetoric. If they knew something about history...or science...or read literature, they might know this
