You can set firm limits on game time. But, really, you want to focus on their responsibilities...Do x, y, z and then you can get to play x hours.

Have a conversation about gaming when they're NOT playing games. Don't wait until they're having the most fun while you're the most pissed off.

Don't go in with a "no more, turn it off" attitude. Then it's you vs. the game and your child.

Another thing: Talk to other parents of your child's friends. If they have to do laundry while their friends get to play, it is a much harder battle.
