Increasing population density leads people to interfere so much more with their neighbors. If the next farm is a quarter mile away, nobody cares what you do. If houses are packed tight, people constantly try to force each other to have the right paint color, plants, etc.

I think it's more so that farmers could use each other's help every now and then.

No, because there are plenty of situations where an apt dweller's life would be easier by getting a hand from his neighbor, i.e. moving in a new washing machine. It's just not an option.
