The biggest problem for the Boy Scouts is tech and the decline of outdoor activity in general. Kids get outside a lot less today than even 20 years ago. Wilderness and forest areas are increasingly far away and forgotten.

I know parents who have spent upwards of $40k a year on travelling sports. It's insane. Kids no longer have fun in sports and the pressure put on them is immense because parents see it as an investment for college scholarships. No time for anything like boy scouts at all.

Yeah that's nuts. In general, most kids are so much more overscheduled today than 30 years ago.
-
Parents schedule play time for their kids now too. And people wonder why these kids aren't prepared for life on their own.
