Note: I shouldn't have used the word "saved" here because as far as I know there was no saving of Evans. The real point is it doesn't make sense to pour resources into a nearly brain dead person who has no possibility of recovery.

What if it were say one of your family members? Would (1) still hold?

My interests and socially optimal use of resources do not necessarily align.

The state is making a statement about it's totalitarianess : they will make the decision and you will accept it, public input on the matter will not be listened too
-
tbf I'm not sure the public is actually right about this one (as far as maintaining life support, maybe) except re taking the kid to Italy. (I don't actually know what his condition was etc)
-
Concur, esp itality. Makes sense if the state is making a statement that any children belong to the the state at the end of the day, and they will decide what to do with them.

Due process to determine it's a waste of further resources is fine But the government deciding to cut off care for a child and further declaring the child cannot then receive outside resources is where it becomes evil

And it's not always possible, even with the resources. But not letting the parents choose to seek alternate treatment at no cost (small negative cost, actually) to NHS when they think they can't save the child is evil.
-
In the U.S. we let Christian Scientist and Jehovah's Witless deny treatment to their kids, up to a point. But if an American hospital said "we can't save him", they'd let the parents take the kid home. The fight would be if the hospital thought they *could* save the kid.
