Personally, we've sent kids to school and also done some homeschooling. Some of the reason we've used school is that the relatives would freak out if we did all homeschooling. Some of the school has probably been good for at least one kid. Not sure about the other two.

That's what happens when you're on the wrong side of the public goods problem. The external benefit of your actions is spread over the full population, while you bear the full burden of the costs. The same dynamic (in reverse) drives the formation of special interest groups.
