The Bush v Gore case and the 2000 election fallout in general is under-recognized as the beginning of our national divorce. People forgot about it after 9/11 but the war really started there.

Like most declines it didn't start with one item, but a flock of sparrows. Francis Fukuyama "End of History." The '90s were laced with irony. It felt like an endgame of sorts, as a child. Dot-com bubble, Bush v. Gore & fallout, 9/11, Iraq invasion. GWB horrible pres.

In a way, I think it helped SCOTUS elevate its status even more. The entire political apparatus of the country was paralyzed until the nine gods made a ruling.
