It's one of the opening lines of The Fellowship of the Ring movie. I was watching it recently, and this line really struck a chord. How many people can even conceive of Detroit in the 1930s today? Few even remember California in the 50s. Much gets forgotten.

(I assume this line is also present somewhere in Tolkein's writings even if it's not right at the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring book)
