Some of it also must be ideological change independent of diversity. Somehow everyone today sees all interactions as more adversarial. Maybe it's the decline of religion or the spread of the ideas of economics.

Also if people are just spreading more knowledge about such scams due to the ease of communication today, then more people will scam.

Perhaps in aggregate. I grew up in MA and found it to be pretty high trust, though the town’s residents were definitely addicted to (((entertainment)))

Haven’t spent a ton of time in CT except for some mostly older and all white coastal areas, which seemed high trust but certainly weren’t representative
