A good test for whether people should really be in separate countries (whether or not you're actually in a democracy): "Would these people generally vote in favor of the same candidates & issues I would vote for?"

In general, persistent & substantially different voting blocks should consider separating. North and South US should have a long time ago. Perhaps all those Civil War deaths could have been averted.

Why fight at the ballot box and have one side impose its will on the other when both sides could have their wills enacted in their own separate areas? Wouldn't more people find their government more suitable that way?

This is not to say that there should be endless splitting, but most of us would probably be better off with substantially smaller countries.
