Selection is all about differential death rates and differential fertility rates. Death used to be far more important for human selection, and marriage developed to enable men to contribute directly to the resources available to their children, increasing survival.

What's really important about all of this is that if you want a nice, sustainable society with traditional families, advancing tech, and high resources per person, you'd better make sure you're selecting for it. Currently we're not.
