There are definitely some ways Trump could have stuck to his guns. No amnesty, no budget deal without a wall, etc. But Trump is pressured by polls, media, big business, and the GOP establishment, and some of this is a calculation about popular support. https://twitter.com/PaleHominid/status/950842668229242880 …

You're giving him too much credit. He's largely ceded governing to Ryan and McConnell and as long as he feels like he won something then he's happy. Facts only piss him off.

Your view is basically wrong. He's limited, and he's trying to make deals. He hasn't just ceded governing.

Again you're giving him too much credit. He hasn't come up with a coherent ideology of what he wants his presidency to be, and he doesn't care enough to. Absent that he just mostly goes along with whatever Congress decides and makes bold statements that are impotent.

The man is not an idiot, despite what the media would have you think. His ideology is not extremely consistent, but it's not completely random either. It's more consistent than most pols. He has been consistently in favor of American manufacturing and jobs for decades.

I'm not trying to insult him too much but goddamn you have to acknowledge at least half of his problems are self-inflicted.

No, actually, I think he has a lot of enemies and people who hate his favored positions enough that this would have happened to anyone with similar positions who could have become president.
