Perspective I heard recently that I've never really understood: GOP congressman bloviating about increasing military spending in order to project American power to keep us safe ? Isn't the current military already a sufficient deterrent? What about the actual invasion going on?

The truth is our ICBM's combined with a military of 1/5th the expenditure is surely enough deterrent, all the rest of the spending is a waste.

It's the military industrial complex that Eisenhower warned us of, imho.... There's alot of money at stake, and its easy for flag-wavers to get enough people on board...

Why would China spend more if the USA spent less? The conventional wisdom is that nations spend more to keep up with other nations they perceive as a military threat to themselves.

I think regardless of whether the USA spends at current levels or cut it by 40%, though, the Chinese will continue to bully neighbors relating to territorial claims that are under dispute. Why? Because they can. They know the USA isn't going to war over fishing rights.

War buildups can happen pretty fast, and I fail to see how all this power projection is doing us any good at all
