I think there was a real change that happened around then or a little before. I suspect that the explosion of social media plus the privilege meme is what did it. Suddenly libs went from caring about freedom to caring about privilege due to mass sharing of those memes on FB.

2. The left had a lot of class focus prior to 08, but the 08 Dem primaries showed that people got much more excited about race and gender than class. Obama got in and didn't go after the bankers even though Occupy Wall St wanted him to. Occupy didn't gain mainstream traction, and

when that ended around 2011 the whole populist agenda was swept under the rug in favor of the more popular racial agenda. It helped that the corporations and even the wealthy nonwhite figures like Oprah had much more to gain from the racial stuff than the class stuff.
