Things were just fine when "gender" and "sex" were regarded as synonyms.

If people really want to separate sex and gender into "biological sex" and "a person's mental state about their biological sex", that would be ok except for the fact that people aren't clear about which one they're talking about most of the time.

The result is a discussion like the chromosome one I retweeted earlier. "There are two genders, xx and xy" "Actually chromosomes don't determine gender etc". The whole discussion is dumb.

(For the reasons yeyo stated.) Chromosomes do determine sex Sex does almost always determine which sex people feel like Yes, there are a few cases where people either feel like another sex or where sex itself is less obvious.

Of course. And the trick employed in creating the confusion is so absurdly simple, it hurts: instead of speaking of gender correctly as masculine or feminine, describe it (incorrectly) as male or female. Job done.
