Probably they should explicitly only have given immunity to service providers who didn't censor, but that would literally be the opposite of the original intent, which was to encourage censorship by preventing suits based on the idea of censorship as editorial control

I suspect that Congress would have been perfectly happy to allow sites to censor "objectionable" political views, tbh. People who actually care about free speech are a minority in this country

Oh I remember those days. Censorship was popular then, too, especially with congressional types. AOL's censorship was quite extensive. It actually wasn't until the mid-00s that people started to get used to the idea of real freedom of speech online.
